Changing your address on your vehicle registration certificate: everything you need to know (2026)
Legal obligation: Since 2017, you have one month after your move to update the address on your vehicle registration certificate. Failure to comply will result in a fine of €135 (4th class offence).
Changing the address on the vehicle registration certificate is one of the most common administrative procedures in France. More than 3 million French people move every year, yet many are still unaware of their obligations or postpone the process.
1 Are you obliged to change the address?
Yes, without exception. Article R322-7 of the Highway Code requires that the information on the vehicle registration certificate be accurate and up-to-date. Driving with an outdated address is an offence, even if your vehicle is otherwise compliant.
This obligation applies to:
- Any move to a new dwelling (tenant or owner)
- Any change of department or region
- Secondary residences becoming primary residences
- Company vehicles in the event of a change of registered office
2 What documents do you need to prepare?
- Current vehicle registration certificate (your grey card)
- Proof of address less than 6 months old — EDF bill, rent receipt, tax notice, CAF certificate...
- Valid identification document (CNI or passport)
- Valid technical inspection certificate if the vehicle is more than 4 years old
- Cerfa 13750 form (provided and pre-filled by our experts)
3 How much does it cost?
The cost depends solely on one thing: are you changing regions or not?
| Situation | Regional tax | Fixed taxes | Estimated total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moving within the same region | €0 (exempt) | €13.76 | ~€13.76 + service fees |
| Moving to another region | Recalculated | €13.76 | Variable depending on CV and region |
4 Why use an approved intermediary?
You have the choice between carrying out the procedure yourself via the official State portal (France Titres / ANTS) or entrusting it to an approved intermediary such as CarteGriseFrançaise.fr. Both methods are legal and lead to the same result. The difference is the level of support.
The official portal requires, in particular, a connection via FranceConnect or France Identité, the preparation of documents in specific formats and sizes, and autonomous navigation through the forms. This is perfectly feasible, but some profiles prefer to be guided from A to Z.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I drive while the address change is in progress?
Yes. As soon as your application is submitted, you receive a temporary registration certificate (CPI) valid for 30 days. This document is sufficient in case of a check. Your old registration certificate remains valid until you receive the new one.
Do I need to change license plates after moving?
No. The SIV registration system (in force since 2009) is for life and does not change with relocation. Your current license plates remain valid, regardless of your department of residence.
My vehicle is on lease (LOA/LLD): who handles the procedure?
In the case of LOA or LLD, the vehicle belongs to the financing company. It is generally up to them to carry out the change of address. Contact your leasing institution for the procedure to follow.
What happens if I don't change the address?
You risk a 4th class fine (€135). Furthermore, in case of an accident or insurance issue, an incorrect address on your title can create serious administrative complications.
I'm moving temporarily: do I still need to change the address?
The legal obligation applies as soon as your new address becomes your primary residence. If you are staying with a relative while work is being done, the process can wait until you move in permanently.
