Error in the transfer declaration: how to correct it?
📄 What is a transfer of ownership declaration?
The transfer of ownership declaration is the official document that certifies the transfer of ownership of a vehicle between a seller and a buyer. It corresponds to Cerfa n°15776*02.
Since 2017, the procedure is entirely dematerialized: the seller must declare the transfer on ants.gouv.fr within one month after the sale. They then receive a 5-digit transfer code which they transmit to the buyer. Without this code, the buyer cannot register the vehicle in their name.
🔴 The 7 errors that block everything
Incorrect transfer date or time
The date and time must be exact and consistent between the paper Cerfa and the ANTS declaration. An incorrect date creates liability issues and leads to automatic rejection.
Incorrect VIN or license plate number
Even a single character difference in the VIN (17 characters) or license plate = automatic rejection. The VIN can be found on the registration certificate (box E) and on the chassis.
Forgotten signature
Cerfa 15776*02 must be signed by both parties. An unsigned document is invalid. Any handwritten correction also invalidates the document.
Error in the buyer's name
If the seller entered an incorrect name on the ANTS, the buyer cannot use the transfer code: the identity does not match. Systematic blockage.
Transfer code not transmitted or expired
The 5-digit code is valid for 15 days. After this period, the seller must generate a new one. Without this code, it's impossible to register.
Inconsistent or old address
The address on the Cerfa must match that on the identity document and proof of address. An outdated address leads to rejection.
Registration certificate not crossed out or improperly crossed out
The old registration certificate must be crossed out diagonally with the mention "Vendu le [date] à [heure]" (Sold on [date] at [time]) and the seller's signature. Without complete mention = rejected application.
⚠️ Consequences of uncorrected errors
Here's what you risk if you don't correct it quickly:
- Registration blockage: impossible to obtain your registration certificate until the error is corrected.
- Seller's responsibility maintained: the seller remains the legal owner and may be held responsible for infractions.
- Fine: driving without a valid temporary registration certificate (CPI) is punishable by a fine of €135.
- Non-refundable taxes: taxes paid to ANTS in case of refusal are not refunded.
- Additional delays: each new submission starts from scratch (3 to 8 weeks during peak periods).
🤔 Can you correct a transfer error yourself?
This depends on the type of error and the seller's availability:
✗ Correcting alone: the obstacles
- Re-contacting the seller (often difficult)
- Filling out a new blank Cerfa
- Having both parties re-sign
- Risk of making the same mistake again
- Waiting 3 to 8 weeks
- Taxes not refunded in case of a second refusal
- No help if the seller is unreachable
✓ Via an authorized professional
- Analysis and identification of the error
- Correction and submission within 24 hours
- Complete verification before submission
- Solutions even if the seller is unreachable
- Zero rejections, zero wasted time
- Real-time tracking
- Registration certificate received within 48–72 hours
✅ How to correct step by step
Accurately identify the error
Check the ANTS refusal email (check your spam) and your ants.gouv.fr account → "Mes démarches" (My procedures) to find out the exact reason for the blockage.
Contact the seller
For most errors (name, date, VIN), the seller must intervene on their ANTS account to cancel the declaration and create a new one. Notify them quickly.
Fill out a new blank Cerfa
Download Cerfa 15776*02 from our website or service-public.fr. Fill it out without any scratching out or corrections. Have both parties sign it.
The seller declares the new transfer
The seller cancels the old declaration on ants.gouv.fr and creates a new one with the corrected information. They receive a new 5-digit transfer code.
Submit your complete application
With the new transfer code and corrected Cerfa, submit your request via an authorized professional for priority processing within 48 hours.

This is one of the most frequent and complex cases. If the seller no longer responds:
- Error in the name: without the seller's intervention, you cannot use the transfer code. An authorized professional knows the alternative procedures.
- Transfer code not transmitted: specific steps exist to unblock the situation.
- Registration certificate not crossed out: procedures with the prefecture may be necessary.

Can an error on an already signed Cerfa be corrected?
No. Any handwritten correction automatically invalidates the Cerfa. You must fill out a new blank form and have both parties sign it.
What to do if the seller made an error in my name?
The seller must log in to ants.gouv.fr, cancel the existing declaration, and create a new one with your correct name. They will then generate a new transfer code. If unreachable, contact an authorized professional.
The transfer code has expired — what should I do?
The code is valid for 15 days. After this period, the seller must log in to ants.gouv.fr again and generate a new code. The declaration remains valid; only the code needs to be renewed.
How long does it take to correct a transfer error?
With an authorized professional: 24 to 48 hours. Alone, by contacting the seller and resubmitting on ANTS: 3 to 8 weeks depending on the period.
Are taxes paid refunded in case of refusal?
No. Taxes paid to ANTS are never refunded, even in case of refusal due to an error. This is why it is crucial to submit a correct file the first time.
Can I drive while my file is being corrected?
Yes, if you have a valid CPI (1 month, renewable once). Without a valid CPI, you risk a fine of 135 €. Consult our guide on ANTS 2026 deadlines.
The seller refuses to correct their error, what should I do?
An authorized professional knows alternative procedures. In extreme cases, an approach to the prefecture or legal action may be considered.
Where can I find my vehicle's VIN number?
The VIN (17 characters) can be found on the registration certificate in box E, on the vehicle's chassis (visible through the windshield on the driver's side), and on the certificate of conformity.
What is the difference between Cerfa 15776 and the ANTS declaration?
Cerfa 15776*02 is the paper form signed by both parties. The ANTS declaration is the online procedure carried out by the seller. Both are necessary and must be consistent. The ANTS declaration generates the transfer code essential for the buyer.
How much does it cost to correct a transfer declaration?
Through an authorized professional, fees are generally €29.90 to €79 depending on complexity. Consult our detailed rates.
Can the seller cancel an already made declaration?
